From the moment the matchup for Super Bowl 58 was decided, money has been pouring in on the Kansas City Chiefs. As of Wednesday, BetMGM had received five times the amount of bets on Kansas City’s moneyline than on San Francisco’s, according BetMGM’s John Ewing. And more than 80 percent of the early moneyline handle was on the Chiefs. Not everyone has the same reasons for their bets, obviously, but a few of the common reasons for why the Chiefs are a public darling might include them being the reigning champs, having Patrick Mahomes and getting even odds as a slight underdog. ..@Chiefs +110 to win the Super Bowl. It’s the Super Bowl, so more causal fans are getting in on the action, meaning people might be betting on the Chiefs because of the Taylor Swift connection, or because they recognize Travis Kelce from a million commercials, or because Oz the Mentalist picked the 49ers to lose the Super Bowl back in training camp. Below are a few more silly trends favoring Kansas City.

Fox Sports writer Peter Schrager makes a Super Bowl pick before each season begins, and he’s incredibly predicted the winner four years in a row. Beginning with Kansas City’s win over the Niners in 2019, he also picked the Buccaneers, Rams, and Chiefs in the three years to follow. His pick before this season started? The Chiefs over the 49ers. The Chiefs are the fifth team in NFL history to allow fewer than 28 points in at least 19 games of a single-season, according to NFL writer Scott Kacsmar. The previous four teams to do so all won the Super Bowl.

The 49ers finished the regular season with a 12-5 record, which was one game better than the Chiefs at 11-6. Since 2003, the team with the better record in the Super Bowl has gone 1-15 against the spread, according to Action Network’s Evan Abrams.
49ers enter the Super Bowl with a slightly better straight up win pct (74%) than the Chiefs (70%) this season. In recent history, that hasn’t boded well for San Francisco’s side — the team with the better win pct is 1-15 ATS in the SB since 2003 ⤵️

According to X user Jay Cuda, the moon is expected to be in a waxing crescent phase for the Super Bowl, and that heavily favors the Chiefs. In the last five years, the Chiefs are 19-1 under waxing crescent conditions. The one loss came to the Buffalo Bills. The 49ers are 15-15 in their last 30 games under a waxing crescent, according to Cuda.
