The Chargers are starting their search for a new general manager to replace Tom Telesco, who held the position for 11 years. They have already sent out interview requests to five potential GM candidates.
Among the candidates is former Dolphins GM and current Saints assistant GM Jeff Ireland, according to NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport. Also included in the list is Cowboys VP of player personnel Will McClay, as reported by the Dallas Morning News’ Calvin Watkins. The other candidates who received interview requests from the Chargers are 49ers assistant GM Adam Peters, Giants assistant GM Brandon Brown, and Bills VP of player personnel Terrance Gray, according to SI.com’s Albert Breer and NFL.com’s Tom Pelissero.
This is Ireland’s first appearance in this year’s GM search. There have been rumors of a reunion between Ireland and Sean Payton, but it looks like Payton will remain with George Paton, making it unlikely for Ireland to move to Denver. Ireland worked with Payton in New Orleans for seven years, where they helped revive the franchise after a period of decline in the mid-2010s.
Ireland has been credited for his role in the Saints’ impactful 2017 draft class, which included players like Marshon Lattimore, Alvin Kamara, Ryan Ramczyk, and Trey Hendrickson. He has been the Saints’ college scouting director since 2015. Ireland also brings a wealth of experience from his time as the Dolphins’ GM and has previously interviewed for GM positions with the Panthers, Lions, and Bears.
Despite Jerry and Stephen Jones making the final decisions for the Cowboys, McClay has played a crucial role in the team’s success over the years. He has been with the Cowboys since 2003 and has been a key figure in their talent acquisition. Peters has also received requests from the Commanders and Raiders, given the success of the 49ers under Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch. Gray is being considered by the Raiders, and Brown is on the Panthers’ radar after his second year as the Giants’ assistant GM.
