The Philadelphia Eagles issued their first official injury report on Thursday in advance of their Week 16 Christmas game against the New York Giants.
For the second week in a row, the Eagles deviated from the late season norm of having a light walkthrough and instead went with a padded practice.
Five players were listed under DID NOT PARTICIPATE: DeVonta Smith, Darius Slay, Landon Dickerson, Zach Cunningham, and Nicholas Morrow.
Smith is an unexpected addition to the injury report. He’s listed with a knee issue. Smith was previously listed on the report with a knee isssue back in Week 13 but he was limited at the beginning of the week before being upgraded to full participation the next two days. We’ll see if Smith, who has never missed a game, makes progress over the coming days.
Slay is likely out after having knee surgery last week. It was said that he’s expected back before the end of the regular season, so, maybe next week? The Eagles went with James Bradberry and a rotation of Kelee Ringo/Eli Ricks in his absence. I’d expect them to go with that configuration once again despite Bradberry’s obvious struggles.
Dickerson had thumb surgery. He’s reportedly set to miss at least one game. It remains to be seen who will start at left guard. With Cam Jurgens seemingly on track to return, it’ll probably be Sua Opeta who shifts over there after filling in at right guard. Tyler Steen has more experience repping at RG than LG.
Cunningham might be on track to miss his second game in a row, leaving the Eagles with three off-ball linebackers on the active roster: Morrow, Shaq Leonard, and Ben VanSumeren. And if Morrow can’t play, well, they’re down to just two. Leonard has not looked good thus far and BVS is an undrafted rookie free agent with zero defensive NFL snaps played. The Eagles could look to temporarily elevate Brandon Smith from the practice squad to have another body at this position.
Two players were listed under FULL PARTICIPATION: Cam Jurgens and Avonte Maddox.
Jurgens appears to be on track to play against the Giants after missing Week 15. Good news for the Eagles.
The Eagles opened Maddox’s 21-day practice window to return from injured reserve on Thursday. Might he actually be able to play this week? It’s interesting to see that he was full go instead of being eased back in through a limited capacity. Perhaps the team will be cautious and hold him out for at least one more game. We’ll see if he’s activated to the roster or not prior to Monday’s game.
Grant Calcaterra is notably not listed on the injury report despite getting banged up in Week 15.

NEW YORK GIANTS INJURY REPORT (THURSDAY)
In addition to being a bad team, the Giants are banged up.
Second-team All-Pro defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence missed Thursday’s practice due to a hamstring injury. It’s an issue he’s been dealing with for multiple weeks. There seems to be a sense he might not be able to play in Philly. The Giants missing Lawrence would be significant since he’s arguably their best player. Lawrence ranks second (only behind Aaron Donald) in pressures generated by interior defenders this season.
The Giants also might be missing Rakeem Nunez-Roches. If that’s the case, they’ll be without two of their top three defensive tackles (three of their original top four when factoring in trading Leonard Williams away). Also, the one remaining top four DT is A’Shawn Robinson, who is listed as limited due to a back issue. In related news, the Giants signed a DT from the Atlanta Falcons’ practice squad.
Evan Neal seems bound to miss another game, which might be a case of addition by subtraction given how much he’s struggled at right tackle. That said, the Giants’ offensive is still expected to be bad … they’ve allowed the most sacks per game (5.4) this season.
RB2 Matt Breida was limited due to a hamstring issue.
Punter Jamie Gillan was limited due to a groin issue.
The Giants are currently down to their third kicker. Graham Gano was placed on injured reserve in early November. His replacement, Randy Bullock, was placed on IR this week. That leaves them with Cade York, who got cut by the Cleveland Browns after struggling in the preseason (only four makes on eight field goal attempts).
