The Steelers’ receiver room lacks established players other than George Pickens, but several internal options will have the chance to step up this season. This includes Calvin Austin.
According to Mark Kaboly of The Athletic, the 25-year-old Austin is set to have a bigger role than before (subscription required). This comes after the Steelers traded Diontae Johnson and released Allen Robinson, opening up two starting spots that are still up for grabs.
Although Austin was drafted in the fourth round in 2022, an injury sidelined him for his entire rookie year. In 2023, he had limited playing time due to the presence of Pickens, Johnson, and Robinson. Austin mainly played on special teams as a punt returner and had a 35% offensive snap share, with only 17 catches. Free agent addition Cordarrelle Patterson could take over punt return duties in 2024.
Austin is likely to be utilized in the slot, alongside third-round rookie Roman Wilson. Wilson, who was part of a strong receiver class in this year’s draft, will compete with other options like Quez Watkins, Van Jefferson, and Scotty Miller. Watkins is determined to earn a starting role, but training camp will determine the receiver hierarchy.
Kaboly suggests the Steelers may still look to add another wide receiver, possibly during training camp when unsigned veterans make decisions. With around $16MM in cap space, Pittsburgh has room for such a move.
Regardless of potential additions, Austin could see more playing time in 2024 and may be in line for a contract extension after the season. A strong performance would not only benefit him in contract negotiations but also provide much-needed production for the Steelers at the WR position.
