Brian Daboll Discusses the New York Giants’ Quarterback Dilemma

Daniel Jones‘ recovery from an ACL tear last November has not included 11-on-11 work during the team’s minicamp, but it is widely anticipated that the sixth-year quarterback will be ready for training camp. Upon Jones’ return, he will reclaim the starting quarterback position.

Speculation about Drew Lock potentially challenging Jones for the starting role has surfaced multiple times this offseason. Seahawks GM John Schneider contributed to one such instance, stating that the Giants had convinced Lock to compete for the starting job. Brian Daboll recently confirmed that there will be no quarterback competition during training camp, indicating that Jones will be the Giants’ starting quarterback for the sixth consecutive season, barring any setbacks in his rehabilitation journey.

We’ve discussed that. [Lock] understands his role,” stated Daboll (via ESPN.com’s Jordan Raanan) regarding the Jones-Lock quarterback depth chart. “He has been a true professional. He has shown improvement since his arrival here. It’s beneficial to have two more workdays with the guys he may not get as many reps with once we reach training camp.

Reaching the six-year mark as the Giants’ starting quarterback presents an interesting milestone. Both Kerry Collins and Fran Tarkenton ended their time as the New York QB1 after five seasons, while Y.A. Tittle only lasted four seasons. In the last 75 years, Jones will join Eli Manning, Phil Simms, and Charlie Conerly as the only primary starters for the Giants for at least six seasons. Despite the team not getting significant returns on their investments in Jones as the sixth overall pick in 2019 and his 2023 four-year, $160 million extension, the decision-makers are adamant about giving Jones another opportunity.

A Jones-Lock quarterback chart seemed to be a fallback plan for the Giants, who made an offer to the Patriots involving picks No. 6, 47, and their 2025 first-round pick. However, the Patriots thwarted both the Giants’ and Vikings’ interest in Drake Maye by selecting the North Carolina quarterback at No. 3. With next year’s quarterback class not receiving the same accolades as this year’s class, the Giants remain uncertain after passing on prospects like Michael Penix Jr., J.J. McCarthy, and Bo Nix, centering their game plan around Jones by default.

Drafted 36 picks after Jones in 2019, Lock signed a one-year $5 million deal ($4.95 million guaranteed). Lock’s decision to join the Giants was influenced by Jones’ injury history, but Lock currently doesn’t seem to have a clear path to playing time. Jones has missed 21 starts due to injury during his professional career. There could be a scenario towards the end of the season where the Giants choose to rest their starter to ensure he can pass a physical in 2025; failing to do so would result in the Giants owing an additional $12 million in injury guarantees for 2025.

Lock has started 23 games in his career. The Broncos had high hopes for him to become a reliable option, but after leading the NFL in interceptions during the 2020 season, he was demoted. Lock was unable to secure the starting position over Geno Smith in Seattle in 2022 and is currently slotted as New York’s QB2.

Unless a significant injury occurs, the Giants can part ways with Jones next year (via a post-June 1 cut) and only incur $11.1 million in dead money for 2025. The pursuit of Maye suggests that there are doubts about Jones’ future, with his injury history being a major factor. After Jones’ performance in 2022 convinced the current Giants regime to reinvest in him following the decline of his fifth-year option, the often-questioned quarterback is gearing up for another season to prove himself.
