You know the deal. Every year during the last week of the NFL’s regular season, the teams gearing up for the postseason rest their best players to keep them fresh and avoid injuries before the playoffs. This weekend’s Week 18 games will be no different. Already we’re tracking the big names sitting out, the players who are close to hitting their incentives and the teams still hoping to win their way into a better seed. But what about the backups who suddenly find themselves in the spotlight? Week 18 should see plenty of those guys and at least a handful have prop bets that are monitoring as we get closer to kick off. Here are five we’re keeping an eye on this weekend.
San Francisco 49ers Running Back Situation:Brock Purdy and Christian McCaffrey won’t see the field this week, so who’s going to get the ball on offense for San Francisco? With Elijah Mitchell questionable, it seems third string tailback Jordan Mason is in line for a big day against the Los Angeles Rams. The second-year pro out of Georgia Tech has 34 carries for 170 yards and three touchdowns this season. He has a prime opportunity to add to those numbers in Week 18.
Blaine Gabbert’s Interceptions:Yep, Blaine Gabbert is still in the NFL. And he’s certainly no Patrick Mahomes. Given how we’ve seen the Chiefs star struggle with his wideouts this year, this seems like an opening to bet on Gabbert throwing an interception or two against the Los Angeles Chargers. The 34-year-old backup already has two INTs on five pass attempts this season and is up to 49 picks on 51 touchdowns for his career. The Chargers are tied for the third-fewest interceptions this season (8), but that shouldn’t matter in this matchup.
Tutu Atwell’s Opportunity:Before Puka Nacua became the breakout star for the Rams this season, Tutu Atwell was expected to help shoulder the load when Cooper Kupp missed time to begin the season. Well, Kupp is out again this week and Nacua should receive plenty of attention from the 49ers defense. That leaves room for Atwell to reward those who haven’t given up on him yet.
Malcolm Brown’s Touchdown Bet:Another Rams backup who should see plenty of snaps, the veteran Freeman is solid Anytime Touchdown bet.
Glover Quin’s Final Highlights:The 10-year veteran has already announced this will be his final NFL season, so don’t be surprised to see the Lions throw him out there to create a few final highlights. Touchdown props and passing yards overs should all be considered here. If the Lions don’t need to use Jared Goff too much, they won’t.
