Despite missing time due to injury last season, Andrew Thomas has been a reliable presence for the Giants this year. However, a foot injury is now threatening to sideline the standout left tackle.
Reports indicate that Thomas is seeking consultation from a foot specialist in Charlotte, with surgery being a potential option. If surgery is necessary to address Thomas’ injury, it is likely to end his season. As a result, his availability for the remainder of the season remains uncertain.
It is unlikely that Thomas will be able to return for Week 7 or the near future. The extent of his absence due to the foot injury is expected to be significant, potentially leading to an injured reserve placement.
The injury occurred during the Giants’ third-quarter touchdown drive, and there are concerns that it could be a serious setback for Thomas. This would be a major loss for a Giants team that has shown improvement this season, particularly with quarterback Daniel Jones performing better than in 2023. Despite their 2-4 record, the Giants have seen progress from their offensive line, with Thomas being a key anchor for the unit.
All five of the Giants’ offensive line starters, including Thomas, Jon Runyan Jr., John Michael Schmitz, Greg Van Roten, and Jermaine Eluemunor, have played every snap this season. The team has depth with ex-starters available, including Evan Neal as a potential replacement. However, Neal’s performance and injury issues have diminished his stock, leaving Joshua Ezeudu as the primary backup.
The Giants made adjustments to their offensive line plans during training camp, ultimately positioning Van Roten as a starter in place of Neal. Despite ranking 23rd in Pro Football Focus ratings, Thomas has stood out as the 16th best tackle in the league according to advanced metrics.
Ezeudu, initially expected to win a starting guard spot last season, was shifted to left tackle after Thomas’ injury in Week 2. Unfortunately, Ezeudu’s season was cut short due to a toe injury. Thomas, who signed a lucrative extension last year, has a history of ankle surgeries and may add a foot operation to his medical record in the near future.
