Ryan Griffin‘s NFL career as a reserve quarterback came to an end after the 2022 season. The Buccaneers, who had him as their third-string QB behind Tom Brady and Blaine Gabbert, chose not to re-sign him last year.
After being released by the Buccaneers, Griffin transitioned to coaching. He joined the Bears as an offensive assistant and has been playing for Skorpions Varese in the Italian Football League this season. He will rejoin the Bears later in the offseason.
Griffin, 34, signed with Skorpions Varese late last year and has been with the team since March. The Bears expect him to be at their mandatory minicamp, but he is expected to return to the IFL playoffs where his team holds the top seed.
Despite the unconventional schedule, the Bears have accommodated players in other sports in the past. Griffin became known for his extended tenure as a third-string QB, playing 10 seasons in the NFL. He only saw game action in 2019, but his experience will now be utilized in coaching with the Bears.
Additionally, the Bears are making changes in their scouting department with promotions and new hires. They are promoting Ryan Weese to Midwest area scout and hiring Nick Papagno as their new Combine scout. Previous Bears scout Ryan Cavanaugh will now cover the southeast region on the staff of GM Ryan Poles.
