Undrafted free agency is a vital part of the team-building process in the NFL, with a significant number of active players being undrafted free agents. This year, there were 257 players drafted, and likely over 300 will be signed as undrafted free agents, making it an important source of talent. While many of these players may be cut and wash out of the NFL, there are always a few who become key role players, starters, or even stars.
Recapping my 2023 UDFA watchlist:
– #Bears QB Tyson Bagent exceeded expectations & might be the No. 2 QB.
– #Broncos RB Jaleel McLaughlin and #Bucs RB Sean Tucker both made the team.
– Former UAB CB Starling Thomas didn’t make the #Lions but was claimed by the #Cardinals — Logan Ulrich (@loganulrich) September 4, 2023
This year’s undrafted free agent class is unique due to the shallower draft class. Despite this, there are always players who surprise and beat the odds. It’s worth noting that only about a dozen teams had finalized their first wave of UDFA signings as of publication.
Here’s the 2024 version of our UDFA watchlist, along with some helpful links for research.
– 49ers: Wisconsin QB Tanner Mordecai
Honorable Mention: Michigan C Drake Nugent
– Bears: Illinois DT Keith Randolph
HM: UBC OT Theo Benedet

Undrafted free agency remains a crucial aspect of building NFL teams, providing opportunities for overlooked players to make an impact.
