The Philadelphia Eagles made a surprising move in the 2024 NFL Draft by selecting cornerback Quinyon Mitchell in the first round. This marked the first time in over 20 years that the Eagles had chosen a cornerback in round one. General Manager Howie Roseman, known for trading out of the team’s original spot in the first round in previous years, decided to stay put and draft Mitchell without giving up any additional draft assets.
In his first press conference as an Eagle, Mitchell expressed his excitement about joining the team. “I feel like, right now, I’m with the right fit,” said Mitchell. “I’m with the right organization, with the right players, right city, so I feel good about this draft pick right here.”
Before being drafted by the Eagles, Mitchell had opportunities to profit from the Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) rules and the transfer portal, but he chose to stay loyal to the University of Toledo. When asked about his decision at the NFL Combine, Mitchell spoke about the importance of loyalty. “Everybody went away, Toledo stayed loyal so I stayed loyal to them,” he said. “I stay loyal to those who stay loyal to me.”
Coming from a big family as the third oldest of six children, Mitchell grew up in a small town called Williston. Despite being a three-star recruit, he excelled at Toledo, playing 46 games and earning impressive stats as a cornerback, including 6 interceptions, 2 interception returns for touchdowns, 122 tackles, 46 passes defended, and 6.5 tackles for loss.
During his time at Toledo, Mitchell was recognized for his talents, receiving honors such as 2nd-Team Associated Press All-American in 2023, two-time 1st-Team All-MAC in 2022 and 2023, and 3rd-Team Associated Press All-American in 2022. He led the FBS in passes defended in 2022 and finished his college career with the most passes defended in Toledo program history.
Mitchell’s journey to becoming a top draft pick began at the Senior Bowl, where he impressed scouts with his skills. He further solidified his position with a standout performance at the NFL Scouting Combine, where he tied the third-fastest 40-yard dash time of 4.33 seconds.
With Mandatory minicamp approaching in June, Mitchell is eager to continue growing within the Eagles organization. His dedication to loyalty, strong family values, and impressive achievements on the field make him a promising addition to the team. The Philadelphia Eagles made a strategic choice in selecting Quinyon Mitchell, and fans are excited to see how he will contribute to the team’s success in the upcoming season.
