The 49ers completed the contract signings for their rookie draft class today, signing their first-round pick, wide receiver Ricky Pearsall, as reported by Nick Wagoner of ESPN. Now that the rookie contracts are finalized, San Francisco’s front office can focus on other offseason priorities.
Pearsall was a beneficiary of a busy first round that saw a wave of offensive prospects selected at the start of the draft. Despite being projected by some as a second- or third-round pick, Pearsall was chosen late in the first round as the sixth wide receiver taken and one of seven on Day 1.
Hailing from Arizona, Pearsall initially attended nearby Arizona State University, where he had limited playing time in his first two years. It was in his third year that Pearsall became a full-time starter, leading the team in receptions, receiving yards, and touchdowns, catching passes from this year’s No. 2 overall pick, Jayden Daniels.
Following Daniels, Pearsall entered the transfer portal after the 2021 season and joined the Florida Gators in the SEC. In his debut season with the team, Pearsall led Florida in receiving yards and touchdown receptions. Continuing into 2023 with a new quarterback, Pearsall remained a top performer for the Gators. His speed was also utilized in the running game, contributing rushing yards and touchdowns over his collegiate career.
In San Francisco, Pearsall fits the mold of the type of wide receiver the 49ers favor. With prior experience sharing a receivers room with Brandon Aiyuk in college and a playing style similar to Deebo Samuel, Pearsall provides versatility and depth to the receiving corps. While he may not immediately assume a key role, Pearsall’s presence prepares the team for any potential future changes in the receiving lineup.
With Pearsall’s contract settled, only eight rookie draft picks remain unsigned: Caleb Williams and Rome Odunze from Chicago, J.J. McCarthy and Dallas Turner from Minnesota, Michael Penix Jr. from Atlanta, Amarius Mims from Cincinnati, Malachi Corley from New York, and Trey Benson from Arizona.
